Every Web3 developer thinks their protocol is useful. Every founder has a slide deck full of milestones, upcoming features, and ecosystem grants. But none of that tells you whether a project actually has real practical use or is simply a well-funded narrative. The most honest audit starts with the opposite of the usual method: forget roadmap promises, spend an afternoon studying user retention and real on-chain fees. These two numbers expose whether strangers are consistently paying for a project’s service, or whether all the growth is just a sponsored house of cards.
The Roadmap Trap: Why Promises Obscure Current Use
Roadmap promises are inherently speculative. They talk about what the protocol will do, not what it does today. In the current cycle, an audit against a roadmap is even less reliable because teams change priorities without warning, token incentive programs can be restarted, and “v3” never arrives on time. A roadmap also creates an emotional bias: once you read an impressive list of future integrations, your brain tends to fill in missing usage data. That can turn a simple sanity check into a hopium-fueled forecast.
The key is to treat roadmaps as context, not evidence. Evidence of real practical use lives in immutable ledgers. It takes the form of fee revenue generated by anonymous users, repeated interactions with a specific contract, and cohorts of wallets that return after the incentive program ends. If a project cannot point to these on-chain facts, the roadmap is just a story. A great team can still ship a great product later, but “later” is not a valuation metric.
Real On-Chain Fees: The Only Demand-Side Signal That Can’t Be Styled
Real on-chain fees are the closest Web3 equivalent to traditional revenue. They measure how much users actually pay for access to a protocol’s service, whether that means swapping assets, borrowing against collateral, buying NFTs, paying for compute, or keeping an oracle feed fresh. Fee volume is hard to fake without significant financial losses, which makes it the ideal anchor for a practical-use audit.
But not all fees are equal. You need to distinguish between fees paid by real users and fees paid by the project itself to simulate activity. Many projects route volume through subsidized wallets or wash-trade using treasury tokens. To filter out this noise, do the following:
- Look at fee payer counts, not just total fee volume. A project with 10,000 weekly transactions but only 25 unique fee payers is probably an institution or a bot farm, not a consumer product.
- Remove any wallet cluster that gas is topped up from a protocol-controlled treasury. These are almost certainly internal accounts.
- Calculate net fees after excluding transactions where a project token is transferred immediately back to another project wallet.
- Compare fee revenue to token incentives in the same period. If a project pays out three times more in incentives than it earns in fees, it is effectively renting usage. That may be a growth strategy, but it is not proof of retained product market fit.

If removing the token reward would make the fee payment absurd or unprofitable, the fee is probably connected to a liquidity incentive report, not to real demand. A genuine user fee is one that a wallet pays because the protocol is the cheapest or safest way to accomplish something.
User Retention Cohorts: The Difference Between Visitors and Habits
User retention is the hardest on-chain metric to fake. It is one thing to bribe users for a single interaction; it is much harder to make them come back naturally over a 90-day window. This is why retention is the second pillar of any practical-use audit. Roadmap promises don’t matter if users never return after the first month.
The first thing to ignore is “cumulative unique wallets.” That metric only goes up, and airdrop farmers love it. Instead, build a simple cohort analysis:
- Track weekly returning wallets for at least three months. A good sign is a stable cohort of users who made their first transaction before the latest incentive event and still transact today.
- Measure median wallet lifetime, not average. A few bot wallets can distort the average upward. Median lifetime tells you what the typical user experience is.
- Look at “core action retention” rather than “any action retention.” Sending a token is not the same as borrowing or deciding to use the product. For a DEX, core action is swapping. For a lending protocol, it is depositing collateral and taking a loan. If returning users only interact with a token claim contract, that is not retention.
- Segment wallets by fee amount. A small handful of power users may generate most of the fees. That is fine, but you need to verify that the same power users are still present several months later.
Once you have sufficient data, look at the shape of the retention curve. The healthiest Web3 projects look like traditional subscription products: after an early drop-off, the share of active wallets stabilizes. Unhealthy projects show a spike when the incentive program starts and a cliff when it ends. The cliff is the clearest possible proof that the product is not a daily tool—it is a reward farm.
Fake Usage Comes with Fingerprints: Watch for These Warning Signs
Even when on-chain fees and retention curves look healthy, a robust audit should search for usage fingerprints that indicate fabricated demand. There are a few recurring patterns in Web3 projects that want to appear active without building real product-market fit:
- Unexplained cross-chain roundtrips. The same wallet swaps from one side of the bridge to another and back again to generate volume. This is easy to spot with a graph explorer.
- Gasless transactions from a project-owned relayer. If the protocol pays for gas, the relayer can hide the actual cost of the interaction. Some of these relayer wallets receive token distributions in return.
- Excessive token velocity. In a short time, the same token moves through many addresses in a closed loop. This pattern is common in wash trading and “use heat” manipulation.
- Time clustering. Most real usage spreads across the day. If 80% of transactions occur in the same hour every day and stagger over UTC-aligned blocks, there is a good chance bots are behind the volume. Include this as a red flag in your mental model.
It helps to combine fee data with retention data: a project that has hundreds of fee payers but near-zero retention can still be a pump-and-dump infrastructure play. A project that has solid retention and growing fee payer counts is worth far more scrutiny from a fundamental research perspective.
A Reusable Checklist for Auditing Web3 Projects in the Current Cycle
This cycle’s post-incentive reality makes a manual checklist necessary. You can apply the same framework to any L1, L2, DEX, lending market, social protocol, or NFT platform in a short amount of time:
- Step 1: Extract fees for the trailing 90 days. Use Dune Analytics or a block explorer to find daily revenue. Exclude revenue generated by governance proposals or direct protocol grants.
- Step 2: Rank fee payers by cumulative usage. Identify the top 100 wallets and check how many contracts they also interact with. A genuine user will usually have a varied wallet history, not just one or two protocol-owned accounts.
- Step 3: Look for retention cohorts based on first interaction date. Group new wallets by month and track whether they return in later months. Pay special attention to wallets that joined before the last token listing or hype wave.
- Step 4: Check the “fee per returning wallet” ratio. If average fees are rising and active wallets are growing steadily, that is a healthy sign. If fees are falling even while advertising spend rises, practical use is not creating enough value.
- Step 5: Read the roadmap only after the data is in hand. Use the roadmap to check whether the team acknowledges real usage bottlenecks, not to replace missing metrics. A roadmap that focuses on distribution, UX, or fee reduction is more honest than one that simply lists new partnerships.
If you are new to this type of audit, start with a single protocol that has been live for at least a year. That will give you enough data to avoid time-of-launch noise. Then apply the same audit to a smaller competitor in the same category. The contrasts will teach you more than any individual metric.
From Hype to Habit: What the Data Really Says
The phrase “real practical use” may sound abstract, but on-chain data always turns it into numbers. A project with real practical use has a stable group of wallets that repeatedly pay fees for a service they could obtain elsewhere. A project with hype has a roadmap, a large total value locked number, and a beautiful interface filled with users who never come back after the reward event ends.
None of this means roadmap promises are irrelevant. Teams that ship fast are attractive because they turn promise into product. But for the specific job of separating real practical use from hype in the current cycle, only behavior speaks loudly. Check if people pay, check if they return, and then you can decide how much weight to give the roadmap. Most projects that look revolutionary in their pitch deck will fail this audit. That is the value of the exercise: it forces every participant in Web3 to care more about work being done than words being said.
When you ignore roadmap promises and track user retention and real on-chain fees instead, the picture becomes clearer. A handful of active users who pay real fees every week is a more durable foundation than a million registered wallets that were generated by a vesting contract. Build your next investment, due diligence, or partnership decision on these two metrics, and the hype cycle becomes just noise.
